§ Mr. Win GriffithsTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment when he will bring forward legislation to meet the requirements of European Community directive 89/618/Euratom on informing the general public about health protection measures to be applied and steps to be taken in the event of a radiological emergency.
§ Mr. ForthProposals for regulations to implement European Council directive 89/618/Euratom are contained in a Health and Safety Commission consultative document due to be published on 28 November 1991. I will arrange for a copy to be placed in the Library. The document will form the basis of a three-month period of public consultation. The commission is required to consider whether changes to the proposals are needed in the light of comments received, during the consultation period. Thereafter, under the terms of article 33 of the Euratom treaty, the European Commission must be given a three-month period within which to comment on the final proposals before legislation is brought forward.
