§ Mr. Bill WalkerTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will now announce the membership of Scottish Natural Heritage; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. LangOn 15 January 1990 my predecessor, my right hon. and learned Friend, the Secretary of State for Transport, announced his intention to appoint Magnus Magnusson KBE as chairman of Scottish Natural Heritage. To serve as members with Magnus Magnusson I have appointed the following:
- Professor Christopher Smout (Deputy Chairman)
- Mr. Alan Blackshaw
- Mrs. Nan Burnett
- Mr. Bruce Cowe
- The Earl of Dalkeith
- Mr. Roy Dennis
- Professor George Dunnet
- Mr. David Laird
- Sir John Lister-Kaye
- Mr. Duncan McPherson
- Dr. Bill Mutch
Scottish Natural Heritage will provide for the first time an integrated approach to the protection of our natural heritage. These appointments represent a wide variety of interests. Experience of day-to-day land management, of the use and enjoyment of the natural heritage and scientific 558W expertise of international repute are combined with the breadth of experience and diversity of expertise of the voluntary movement. I am certain the team they represent will help SNH to achieve a productive and progressive relationship with those who manage the natural resources of our land.
A commencement order has been made which brings Scottish Natural Heritage into formal existence as a corporate body from today. SNH will assume its full powers and responsibilities from 1 April 1992. The interim period will allow SNH to undertake forward planning and to fulfil requirements in the Natural Heritage (Scotland) Act 1991 in relation to the employment of staff.
