To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish the names of the members of the Animals Procedures Committee with their qualifications for membership.

Section 19 of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 requires that, of the members of the Animal Procedures Committee other than the chairman, at least two thirds shall be persons who hold full registration as medical practitioners, registration as veterinary surgeons or qualifications or experience in a biological subject approved by the Secretary of State as relevant to the work of the committee. The committee is also required to have one member who is a barrister, solicitor or advocate, and in making appointments to the committee my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary is required to have regard to the desirability of ensuring that the interests of animal welfare are adequately represented. The Act also requires that at least half the members of the committee are persons who neither hold, nor within the previous six years have held, any licence under the 1986 Act or under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876. Current members of the Animal Procedures Committee have been appointed in line with these requirements.

The membership of the Animal Procedures Committee as at 22 November 1991 is as follows:
