HC Deb 26 November 1991 vol 199 c474W
Mr. McMaster:

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he has any plans to provide local authorities with responsibility for roads with additional finance for the specific purpose of providing accessible and safe road crossings for people with mobility or visual impairments; and if he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

It is for local authorities to include projects for the provision of accessible and safe road crossings for people with mobility or visual impairments in their transport policies and programme documents and financial plans. These will then be taken fully into account in determining capital allocations. Local authorities have been given detailed guidance about the provision of facilities at pedestrian crossings for disabled and visually impaired people. It is for the authorities themselves to decide what priority should be given to providing these facilities and other road safety measures.
