HC Deb 26 November 1991 vol 199 c470W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment on how many occasions a police authority has become insolvent in that its current expenditure in the current financial year exceeds its income; and what powers he has to deal with such an eventuality.

Mr. Key

No single-service police authority has reported to us that it has ended any year with a deficit. The management of its financial affairs, including dealing with any deficit, is a matter for each individual authority.

Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment on how many occasions he or his predecessors have advised police authorities to run revenue deficits on the assurance of income in future years; and what powers he has to offer such assurances.

Mr. Key

None. We have no such power.
