To ask the Secretary of State for Transport by what percentage the number and the rate of each category of fatal and serious road casualties has changed since the target was set of reducing casualties by one third by the year 2000.

Mr. Chope

The Government target of reducing casualties by one third by the year 2000 was set in 1987, using the average annual number of casualties in the years from 1981 to 1985 as a baseline. The requested information is as follows:
