HC Deb 25 November 1991 vol 199 c372W
Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what was the volume of outstanding credit granted by Finance Houses Association members to consumers in 1989 and 1990;

(2) what percentage of non-mortgage outstanding credit was accounted for by credit cards in 1989 and 1990; and what are the estimated percentage figures for the current year.

Mr. Maples

Information about credit advanced by members of the Finance Houses Association is not available from official statistics, but I understand the figures are published in the Finance Houses Association annual report 1991, a copy of which is in the Library.

The percentages of non-mortgage outstanding credit to consumers accounted for by bank credit cards were 14.4 and 16.6 at the end of 1989 and 1990 respectively. The latest available figures show that at the end of the third quarter of 1991 the percentage was 17.6 per cent. Information about credit on non-bank credit cards is not available.
