To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what is the present number of Irish(a) men and (b) women being held in prisons for terrorist activities committed in the United Kingdom;

(2) what is the prison category of Irish (a) men and (b) women being held in prisons in England and Wales for terrorist activities.

Mrs. Rumbold

As at 19 November 1991, the numbers of men and women held in prisons in England and Wales for terrorist-related offences committed in the United Kingdom who have given the Irish Republic as their place of birth were nine and one respectively. All these prisoners are in category A.
