HC Deb 21 November 1991 vol 199 c275W
Sir John Stanley

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many taxpayers in the United Kingdom fall within the ambit of the taxpayers charter.

Mr. Norman Lamont

[holding answer 18 November 1991]: The taxpayers charter covers taxpayers dealt with by the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise. The Inland Revenue deal with over 30 million taxpayers, including individuals, partnerships, companies and trusts. Customs and Excise deal with around 1.8 million VAT traders, 35,000 excise and inland customs traders and international travellers (some 60 million each year). Some people fall under more than one of these categories.
