HC Deb 21 November 1991 vol 199 cc286-7W
Sir Barney Hayhoe

To ask the Lord President of the Council what additional retirement pension would be earned by an hon. Member who had 10 years' service as(a) a junior Minister, (b) a Minister of State and (c) a Cabinet Minister.

Mr. MacGregor

Under the terms of the governing Acts of the parliamentary contributory pension fund Ministers and paid office-holders have the option of whether or not to join the supplementary scheme in addition to the basic scheme which is available to all Members. The rate of supplementary pension payable from the fund is based on the contributions paid on the amount of the Ministers' or office-holders' total remuneration which is in excess of Members' pensionable salary during the period of office. Since these salary and contribution levels are not constant, the pension figures set out have been calculated on current levels as if they were to pertain throughout the 10-year period. They also assume that the 10-year period ends at age 65.
