HC Deb 21 November 1991 vol 199 cc292-3W
27. Mr. Ashby

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to improve the transport of animals within the European Community.

Mr. Gummer

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave earlier today to my hon. Friend the Member for Fulham (Mr. Carrington).

Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a further statement on the recent agreement in the Farm Council on the transport of horses and other animals.

Mr. Maclean

The directive on protection of animals during transport has now been adopted formally by the Council and will be published shortly. The agreement reflects the deep public concern in this country over the transport of horses and other animals and the Government are grateful to all those who gave support in the negotiations by making their views known to the Commission and throughout the Community.
