To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to improve animal welfare standards throughout Europe.

Mr. Maclean

We continue to press for the highest standards of animal welfare to be adopted throughout the Community and have now achieved our key objectives on the protection on animal transport including horses.

We will continue to strive for adoption of United Kingdom standards, including those for calf and pig farming, throughout the EC.
