HL Deb 20 November 1991 vol 532 cc67-8WA
Lord Macaulay of Bragar

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (a) what is the cost to date of the Orkney Inquiry;
  2. (b) what is the projected timescale of the inquiry; and
  3. (c) what is the estimated cost of the inquiry in—
    1. (i) administration and expenses;
    2. (ii) witnesses costs; and
    3. (iii) the cost of legal representation funded by the Scottish Office.

Lord Strathclyde

A number of parties are incurring costs in the Orkney Inquiry. Information is not available centrally on this and it is not therefore possible to quote the total cost of the Inquiry to date. The duration of the inquiry depends on the chairman, Lord Clyde, and his view of the evidence which he requires to fulfil the remit. This precludes any accurate estimates of the constituent costs of the inquiry.
