HC Deb 20 November 1991 vol 199 c201W
Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will publish an estimate of the total amount of poll tax collected in 1990–91 from direct deductions from benefit in(a) Scotland, (b) Strathclyde and (c) Greenock and Port Glasgow.

Miss Widdecombe

An estimated £785,000 in community charge deductions was paid over to the local authority during the financial year 1990–91 by Benefits Agency local offices which cover the Strathclyde area. This figure includes about £37,000 collected from beneficiaries at the Greenock and Port Glasgow social security offices.

A similar estimate for the whole of Scotland could be compiled only at disproportionate cost.
