To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the progress of his plans for Tornado updates and the European fighter aircraft.

Mr. Alan Clark

On Tornado, work is currently proceeding on the development and production planning phases of a mid-life update for the IDS aircraft, with a planned deployment date of the mid–1990s.

On European fighter aircraft, I have nothing to add to the answer I gave the hon. Member on 15 October.
