HC Deb 14 November 1991 vol 198 c654W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what percentage of the NHS's employees are women; and what percentage of trusts are chaired by women.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The latest available data for England relate to the position at 30 September 1990 and show that 76 per cent. of all directly employed staff in the hospital and community health service were female. A total of 17 per cent. of trusts are chaired by women. This represents 5 per cent. of first wave trusts and 24 per cent. of second wave trusts.
