HC Deb 14 November 1991 vol 198 c651W
Mr. Ground

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether the London regional office of the Department of Transport has previously erected wire fencing of the type recently erected along the central reservation of the A4 at Cranford along any other trunk road in London; and what information the London regional office of the Department of Transport or the Secretary of State has on similar use of such fencing on trunk roads in England.

Mr. Chope

[holding answer 11 November 1991]: This combination of fencing has been installed along some 24 miles of trunk road in north, west and east London. There is no central record of how much wire fencing of a similar design to that on the A4 has been used on other trunk roads in England.

Mr. Ground

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what was the cost of supplying and erecting the wire fence recently erected along the central reservation of the A4 at Cranford.

Mr. Chope

[holding answer 11 November 1991]: About £125,000.

Mr. Ground

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether any consultation took place with the local authority, the local community, the Metropolitan Police or any motoring organisations prior to the erection of the type of fencing recently erected at Cranford.

Mr. Chope

[holding answer 11 November 1991]: The Metropolitan police were consulted in the course of regular liaison meetings and are in agreement with the measures taken. The London borough of Hillingdon, which is the Department's agent for these works informed local residents by letter that the works are being carried out.
