HC Deb 14 November 1991 vol 198 cc652-3W
Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment (1) if he will review the progress made by students who applied for temporary jobs during the long university summer vacation compared to non-student applicants for summer jobs;

(2) whether students applying for summer jobs in the long recess are treated by jobcentres differently from non-student applicants.

Mr. Jackson

Questions on operational matters in the Employment Service executive agency are the responsibility of Mike Fogden, the agency's chief executive, to whom I have referred this question for reply.

Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make it his policy to take steps to make it easier for university students to secure temporary work during the summer vacation.

Mr. Jackson

I appreciate that the long summer break on limited financial support can be a difficult time for many students and this year there are likely to have been fewer vacancies on offer to them.

The Employment Service, through its network of jobcentres, does all that it can to help students find temporary vacational work. All temporary jobs notified are put on display in jobcentres and many students use these facilities. This service will continue to operate.
