§ Mr. ChopeThe Commission wrote to the Government in October 1989 about a complaint that it had received alleging that the United Kingdom had not complied with the European directive 85/337/EEC on environmental assessment in respect of the east London river crossing. A response was made to the Commission in December 1989.
This directive is concerned with procedures that member states are required to follow to ensure that the environmental effects of certain projects are assessed. The environmental merits of the east London river crossing are not at issue. That, as the Commission fully recognises, is for the United Kingdom Government to determine.
