To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the total funding allocated to health authorities for cochlear implant operations in each of the past five years; and what funds will be made available in the next three years.

Mr. Dorrell

Funding has been agreed for the three-year period 1990–91 to 1992–93. Details of funding made available in the first two years of the scheme are given in the table. It will continue at a similar level in the third year. Decisions about arrangements beyond 1993 will be made in the light of the evaluation of the programme which is being undertaken by Professor Mark Haggard of Nottingham university.
