HC Deb 12 November 1991 vol 198 c491W
Mr. Stevens

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on funding for sport.

Mr. Atkins

Local authority gross revenue spending in England and Wales on sport and recreation has risen from £720 million in 1985–86 to £1,028 million in 1989–90, the latest available figure.

Subject to the approval of Parliament, the Sports Council's grant in aid next year will be £48.7 million, over £2 million up on this year.

The newly established Foundation for Sport and the Arts will draw about £20 million a year from the further cut of 2.5 per cent. in pool betting duty included in this year's Finance Act, and about £40 million a year from the pools themselves. Some two-thirds will be used for athletic sports or athletic games. The Football Trust has also benefited from a cut in the pool betting duty by an additional £20 million since 1990.

Private sector sponsors provide some £200 million per annum for sport.

Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the relocation of the Sports Council to Nottingham.

Mr. Atkins

Relocation is a matter for the Sports Council. I understand that at present it has no plans to relocate its headquarters out of London.

Ms Hoey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he intends to publish his Ministry's review of sport.

Mr. Atkins

When it is completed.
