HC Deb 12 November 1991 vol 198 c493W
Mrs. Currie

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much was spent on school buildings in 1981 and at the present time; and what the change is in real terms.

Mr. Fallon

Gross capital expenditure on local authority, voluntary, and grant-maintained schools in 1989–90 is some £755 million which compares with expenditure of £391 million in 1980–81—an increase in real terms of some 14 per cent. Over the same period capital expenditure per pupil has risen from £49 to £112—a 34 per cent. rise in real terms. Between 1980–81 and 1989–90 recurrent spending on repairs and maintenance rose by some 25 per cent. per pupil in real terms.
