§ Mr. FallonGross capital expenditure on local authority, voluntary, and grant-maintained schools in 1989–90 is some £755 million which compares with expenditure of £391 million in 1980–81—an increase in real terms of some 14 per cent. Over the same period capital expenditure per pupil has risen from £49 to £112—a 34 per cent. rise in real terms. Between 1980–81 and 1989–90 recurrent spending on repairs and maintenance rose by some 25 per cent. per pupil in real terms.
