HC Deb 12 November 1991 vol 198 c425W
Mr. Nellist

To ask the Attorney-General what was the cost to public funds of the Treasury Solicitor contesting the case in the Appeal Court in July on McKenzie's friend, what fees were paid to the barrister who acted as amicus curiae; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

Treasury counsel was instructed by the Treasury Solicitor to appear as an amicus curiae in the case of Rv. Leicester City Justices ex parte Barrow at the request of the Court of Appeal. Counsel did not appear in order to "contest" the appeal, but in order to assist the court on matters of law. The cost to public funds of such assistance to the Court of Appeal was £2,412.45. The amount of the fee paid to counsel is a matter of professional confidence between solicitor and counsel.
