HC Deb 08 November 1991 vol 198 c312W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what consultations he has had about aid to Burma with other Governments; and what information he has about changes in aid provided to Burma by other Governments.

Mrs. Chalker

After the repression of the democracy movement in 1988, Britain participated actively in consultations among EC partners, which resulted in agreement to suspend all bilateral aid to Burma except for humanitarian and emergency aid. Other major donors took similar action although some continued to implement existing commitments.

We continue to liaise with other major donors on a regular basis, both through diplomatic missions in Rangoon, and through consultations in international as well as EC fora.

A comparison of official development assistance to Burma for 1988 and 1989 (the latest year for which figures for all countries are available) is given in the following table.

In 1990 the United Kingdom figure was £89,000.
