HC Deb 07 November 1991 vol 198 c230W
Mr. Dunnachie

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish details regarding the progress of race equality legislation within the EC; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

The Government are absolutely opposed to discrimination on grounds of race; and this position is reflected in all our discussions with our European partners on these matters.

The Government do not, however, regard EC legislation as the appropriate means for taking action to enhance racial equality. The exact legislative position in member states varies, and is a matter for them, taking account of their particular circumstances.
