To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the variations in the rate of increase of the number of jobs created in the service industries in the regions of the north-east in the past two years.

The latest estimates of employment for area within standard regions relate to the 1989 census of employment. More recent estimates of changes in the number of employees in service industries in the north standard region—Cumbria, Cleveland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and Northumberland—are as follows:
