HC Deb 23 May 1991 vol 191 cc576-7W
Mr. Meacher

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security (1) whether there is any financial disadvantage for a company selling a vehicle purchased through the motability scheme;

(2) if there is any evidence of companies operating a differential charge for those purchasing vehicles with and without assistance from the motability scheme.

Mr. Scott

Motability is an independent charity. The terms and conditions under which companies provide vehicles under the scheme are a matter for Motability.

Mr. Meacher

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many, and what percentage, of people on mobility allowance have purchased a vehicle through the motability scheme.

Mr. Scott

The administration of the motability scheme is a matter for Motability itself. However, as at 9 May 1991, mobility allowance was being paid direct to Motability Finance Ltd. on behalf of 79,997 people who have lease agreements with Motability and 17,042 with hire purchase agreements. The combined total represents 14.9 per cent. of all mobility allowance beneficiaries.
