Mr. O'Neill

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will list the current number of BAOR infantry battalions and armoured regiments that constitute a BAOR division.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

In peacetime, BAOR has three armoured divisions, the composition of each of which is as follows:

  1. 1 Armoured Division—5 armoured regiments and 5 infantry battalions
  2. 3 Armoured Division—4 armoured regiments and 5 infantry battalions
  3. 4 Armoured Divisions—4 armoured regiments and 6 infantry battalions

Mr. O'Neill

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether he has made any detailed decisions about the future of individual BAOR units or their locations as part of the "Options for Change" study.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

I refer the hon. Member to the answer that I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Norwich, North (Mr. Thompson) on 24 January 1991 at column 319–20. No other decisions have been taken.

Mr. O'Neill

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what communications he has had with his Dutch and Belgian counterparts regarding the future roles of the BAOR.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence has been involved in regular meetings with his ministerial colleagues from the other NATO countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium, when discussions have taken place on a range of issues including the future roles of allied forces in Europe.
