HC Deb 21 May 1991 vol 191 c422W
16. Mr. John Carlisle

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he has any further proposals to promote the playing of cricket in schools.

Mr. Atkins

Both schools and local sports clubs have an important role to play in the development of cricket for young people. Physical education in the national curriculum will be compulsory up to the age of 16 with effect from September 1992 and I am urging teachers and coaches to ensure that cricket is one of the competitive team games which is encouraged.
