To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many women general medical practitioners there were in 1970, 1979, 1989 and 1990.

The figures are provided in the table.

Last year the number of women GPs increased by a further 4.5 per cent. continuing the encouraging trend of previous years. Now nearly one in four GPs are women.
