Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, pursuant to his answer of 24 April,Official Report, column 475, for what reason Gerald Clarke was removed from association with other prisoners at Crumlin Road gaol under prison rule 25 (Northern Ireland) 1982; what type of confinement and association he is now receiving; whether he is still on hunger strike; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Mawhinney

Gerald Clarke was removed from association with other prisoners under prison rule 25 (Northern Ireland) 1982 as there was concern for his personal safety. He resumed eating prison food on 25 April and after being declared fit by prison medical staff the prisoner was returned to ordinary location on a wing with other untried prisoners.
