HC Deb 20 May 1991 vol 191 c358W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what provisions exist for the Inland Revenue to ascertain the beneficial ownership of large estates in order to levy appropriate rates of inheritance tax.

Mr. Maude

Inheritance tax is levied on chargeable transfers of value, mainly deemed transfers on death. The Inland Revenue has power to require personal representatives of deceased persons, the trustees of settled property, the donees of chargeable lifetime gifts and others to deliver accounts and to pay inheritance tax. It also has the power, with the consent of the Special Commissioners, to require any person to supply such information as the Board of Inland Revenue requires for inheritance tax purposes. There are no special provisions for large estates.
