HL Deb 20 May 1991 vol 529 c4WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the United States SDIO proposed system, "Global Protection Against Limited Strikes", (which is seen as providing protection against accidental, unauthorised or other limited strikes against the United States, its forces deployed abroad and its friends and allies) has been discussed either in NATO or bilaterally between the United States and the United Kingdom; and what is their attitude towards it.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (The Earl of Arran)

The United States Government is in regular touch with Her Majesty's Government and other NATO governments on a wide range of issues; this has included the redirection of the SDI programme into Global Protection Against Limited Strikes. The Government's approach continues to be based on the principles set out in paragraph 208 of the Statement on the Defence Estimates 1988.

Lord Kennett

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are contributing financially to any part of the GPALS programme.

The Earl of Arran

No.
