HC Deb 20 May 1991 vol 191 c341W
Dr. Kim Howells

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give a breakdown of current earnings in Wales, showing the numbers and percentages of employees earning in each £5,000 band of income per annum up to £30,000 per annum and over £30,000 per annum.

Mr. David Hunt

Estimates for the total earned income of residents of Wales, obtained from the 1988–89 survey of personal incomes, are given in the table. Earnings are for individuals—husbands and wives shown separately—regardless of source, with investment income excluded. The estimates are net of superannuation contributions. Coverage of earned income below £5,000 is incomplete and, as a result, the percentages requested cannot be calculated.

Earned income per annum Number of individuals (thousands)
£5,001 to £10,000 428
£10,001 to £15,000 223
£15,001 to £20,000 72
£20,001 to £25,000 20
£25,001 to £30,000 8
£30,001 and over 16
