HC Deb 17 May 1991 vol 191 cc285-6W
Sir John Farr

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether the Royal Commission on the criminal justice system will consider the retirement age of those dispensing justice;

(2) whether the Royal Commission on the criminal justice system will consider the work of the Crown forensic service;

(3) if the Royal Commission on the criminal justice system will consider replacing the appeal court system with a less adversarial court;

(4) whether the Royal Commission on the criminal justice system will consider the establishment of a national police force.

Mr. John Patten

The Royal Commission on criminal justice has been given very wide terms of reference, and it is for the commission to determine the way in which it will carry out its task and to report accordingly.

Sir John Farr

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements are proposed to allow hon. Members to give evidence to the royal commission on the Criminal Justice System.

Mr. John Patten

It is for the royal commission to determine the way in which it will carry out its task, but I understand that an announcement will be made shortly about the arrangements for the submission of evidence to the commission.
