HC Deb 16 May 1991 vol 191 c233W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if Her Majesty's Government will allocate additional new funds for emergency relief in Africa.

Mrs. Chalker

On 22 April I announced in the House a new pledge of £33 million emergency relief assistance for Africa, col.299. I am currently discussing the detailed allocation of these funds with British and international relief agencies.

Since September 1990 Britain has provided £90 million emergency relief assistance for African countries, including 158,000 tonnes of food aid. We intend to continue to respond speedily and effectively to the needs of famine-affected countries in Africa.

I assured the House on 14 May, col. 220, that Britain would continue to play its full part in the international relief effort to help alleviate the terrible suffering in Africa, as well as to assist the people of Bangladesh to reconstruct their lives.
