HC Deb 14 May 1991 vol 191 c135W
Mrs. Margaret Ewing

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will name the date when the appointment of an RAF community relations officer for the Highlands and Islands will take place.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

As the Government reply—HC 659/90—to the report on low flying by the Defence Committee last year made clear, it is planned to establish three RAF regional community relations officers in southern Scotland/the Borders, the Lake District and in Wales on a trial basis. If this scheme should prove to be a success, the affordability of extending it to other areas will be considered.

Mrs. Margaret Ewing

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the duties assigned to RAF community relations officers in Wales, the Lake District and the Borders.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

The introduction of RAF regional community relations officers in southern Scotland/the Borders, the Lake District and in Wales is intended to improve the presentation of low flying in areas remote from RAF stations; to improve liaison with members of the public and organisations such as Riding for the Disabled, schools, national parks, wildlife reserves, regional farmers organisations and other local bodies and to enable information on the low-flying system to be distributed more widely.
