To ask the Secretary of State for Health what proportion of current national health service expenditure is accounted for by salaries and wages.

Mr. Dorrell

The summarised accounts of regional and district health authorities in England for 1989–90—the latest year available—shows that salaries and wages costs accounted for some 75.6 per cent. of the total revenue expenditure.
