HL Deb 13 May 1991 vol 528 cc61-2WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many oil wells have so far been extinguished in Kuwait; how many are still burning; and by when it is expected that all will have been controlled.

Lord Cavendish of Furness

Reports from Kuwait suggest that about 96 wells have been capped to date and that of the order of 500 uncapped wells remain, many of which are still on fire. It is impossible to predict the timescale required to bring them all under control, as the extent of damage is still being assessed.
