HC Deb 13 May 1991 vol 191 c33W
Mr. McMaster

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will publish a table showing the number of adults with(a) mental handicap, (b) mental illness and (c) physical handicap in any format in which this information is available.

Mr. Dorrell

The number of people registered with local authorities in England under the provisions of the National Assistance Act 1948 as being physically disabled is published in "Registers of Physically Disabled Persons (General Classes) at 31 March 1990, England"—Ref. AF90/19—a copy of which is available in the Library. Estimates of the prevalence within Great Britain of a number of conditions giving rise to disability, including mental handicap, mental illnesses and various categories of physical disability, are given in the report published in September 1988 by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys "The prevalence of disability among adults", a copy of which is also available in the Library.
