To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many credit unions have been set up in(a) England and Wales and (b) Scotland in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement.

The number of new credit unions registered over the period is as follows:

England and Wales Scotland
1986 9 4
1987 15 1
1988 33 11
1989 49 8
1990 55 17

There are currently 235 credit unions registered in England and Wales and 61 in Scotland.
