To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total number of scientific/ medical staff undertaking research and development work on(a) health-related topics and (b) safety-related topics in 1988–89, 1989–90 and 1990–91.

The figures requested are as follows.

Health Safety
1988–89 87 136

1990–91 94 139

The term "research and development work" has been interpreted widely, and the figures include all scientific/ medical staff engaged on the main laboratory activities.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the number of(a) vacancies, (b) applications received, (c) those interviewed, (d) those offered a job and (e) those who accepted a job as a specialist inspector of health and safety in the latest recruitment round.

Mr. Forth

There were no specific number of vacancies for specialist inspectors of health and safety in the latest completed recruitment round which took place in August 1990. Seven hundred and forty-nine applications were received; 229 applicants were interviewed; 58 were offered a job; and 47 accepted a job.
