HC Deb 09 May 1991 vol 190 cc558-9W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy (1) if he will list his Department's current and planned renewable energy programmes in Wales by type, cost, site, location and capacity;

(2) how many applications for renewable energy projects have been submitted for Wales up to date; and if he will list them by site, district council, type and capacity.

Mr. Moynihan

My Department supports an extensive programme of research, development and demonstration of sources of renewable energy where those sources show the potential for economic viability and are environmentally acceptable. In 1990–91 total expenditure was over £20 million. Expenditure is distributed throughout the United Kingdom. There is no specific allocation for Wales. However, there are currently 17 renewable energy projects which have a contractor or site located in Wales. They comprise:

Technology Projects Contract value £ million
Wind 7 4.9
Solar 4 0.6
Tidal 6 1.9

Wind

  • Construction of Carmarthen bay 25m vertical axis wind turbine;
  • Performance monitoring of 25m vertical axis wind turbine;
  • Design, construction and demonstration of MS3 wind turbine;

  • Monitoring of the WEG MS-3 horizontal axis wind turbine at Carmarthen Bay;
  • Experimental work 25m St. Regis vertical axis wind turbine;
  • Ancmometry masts for Capel Cynon;
