HC Deb 09 May 1991 vol 190 c559W
Mr. Viggers

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will state Her Majesty's Government's position on current discussions within the European Community to develop standards for high definition television, D2 MAC and HD-MAC

Mr. Leigh

The Government welcome the consultations initiated by the European Commission with a view to securing consensus between broadcasters and manufacturers on the best route to high definition television. The Government will take a position when the Commission makes its proposals known. The Government have made known their views that the MAC family of standards should be given a fair chance to succeed in the market for wide screen TV transmissions by satellite but this should not entail the enforced cut-off of existing transmission standards.
