HC Deb 08 May 1991 vol 190 c475W
Mr. David Porter

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment his Department has made of the effectiveness of yellow box junctions in accident prevention; and if he has any plans to extend their use to pedestrian crossings.

Mr. Chope

[holding answer 7 May 1991]: Yellow box markings were introduced in the Traffic Signs Regulations 1975 primarily as a means of speeding up traffic flow at junctions. At signal-controlled junctions their introduction led to marked reductions in injury accidents, particularly involving pedestrians.

There are no plans to extend their use to pedestrian crossings. At "zebra" crossings the yellow box would conflict with the zebra stripes. Yellow box markings used at "pelican" crossings would be likely to have little impact.
