To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will give figures for the quantities of blood supplied by private companies and the national blood transfusion service respectively to the national health service in the last year for which figures are available.

Mr. Dorrell

No blood is supplied by private companies to the NHS. In 1989 the national blood transfusion service issued 1,758,951 units of whole blood to the NHS in England.
