§ Mr. Matthew TaylorTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) whether he has any plans to review the indexation of teachers' pensions and what action has been taken in the last six months in regard to indexation of teachers' pensions;
(2) what plans his Department has for determining future increases in teachers' pensions; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. FallonIn common with other public service pensions, teachers' pensions are increased at the same time and by the same percentage as the earnings-related element of the state retirement pension. The amount of the annual uprating each April reflects the movement in the retail prices index during the 12-month period ending the previous September. There are no plans to change these arrangements.
The Pensions Increase (Review) Order 1991 announced that public service pensions would be increased from 8 399W April 1991. For pensions which began before 24 April 1990 the increase is 10.9 per cent. For pensions which began on or after 24 April 1990 a proportion of the full increase is paid.
