HL Deb 07 May 1991 vol 528 c46WA
Lord Mulley

asked her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will arrange that from 1992, the first May Bank Holiday falls on 1st May, as in the rest of Europe, and not as now, on the following Monday.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Employment (Viscount Ullswater)

No. The Government's view is that taking the holiday on a Monday minimises the disruption and expense to industry and commerce.
