§ Mrs. ClwydTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what position Her Majesty's Government took on the suspension of negotiations for an EC-Namibia fisheries agreement; and whether he is taking any action to promote a resumption of negotiations.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe matter was raised in a recent meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Community. Along with other partners, we sought an explanation from the Commission, which has subsequently informed the Namibian Government that the suspension was purely temporary. We look forward to the resumption of negotiations. I shall he taking this up at the ACP ministerial meeting in Brussels next week.
