To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish a table showing the expenditure per pupil on (i) books and (ii) equipment in(a) primary schools and (b) secondary schools in cash and real terms since 1976.

[holding answer 29 April 1991]: Information from 1977, the earliest year for which details are available in the form requested, is given in the tables, which have been compiled from local authority financial returns. Expenditure on equipment was not separately identified in these returns until 1982–83. There have been some variations from year to year in the recording of expenditure under these two headings. It is therefore possible that some expenditure on books may be included under expenditure on equipment and vice versa.
